How is the procedure carried out
Collection of saliva samples
All cells in the human body contain the same genetic information. So, DNA analysis is independent of the source of DNA. Based on the above, DNAlogy leading the way in science uses a custom saliva sampling kit, DNAlogy-Patrotis-kit®, for collection of genetic material.
Saliva sampling has advantages over blood sampling as it is simple, non invasive, fast, easy and discrete. These advantages in conjunction with the advanced technology used in these analysis make this test the most valid and reliable solution to establish paternity.
Alternative Samples
In cases where saliva cannot be collected from the participants, it is possible to use alternative samples. Such samples could be: cigarettes, chewing gum, nails, hairs (with their root), tooth brushes, soothers, clothes, underwear, glasses, cutlery, hand-written notes and any other object suspected to contain genetic material. To send alternative samples to the lab, the DNAlogy-Patrotis-kit® contains a special bag labelled “Alternative sample”.

Useful Scientific concepts (DNA, Heritability, Biological Identity)
DNA
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic material of the cell. Its building components are called nucleotides and it has the structure of a double helix. DNA carries all the information that is necessary for our existence, which is coded for by segments termed genes.
Nonetheless, between genes there are regions that do not carry any information; these however are very useful to establish our biological/genetic identity. Studying these areas to establish biological relationship cannot reveal any other information on the person being tested.
Heritability
50% of each person’s DNA comes for their biological father, an 50% from their biological mother. This flow of information from one generation to the next is fully balanced (50-50); as a result, comparing the DNA (non-coding regions) of one individual to that of their mother and/or father, allows us to establish the biological connection between these individuals.
Biological Identity
The biological identity of each person is the basis of their existence, the strongest evidence of who we are. The information it provides do not change over time nor can they, thereby giving us the ability to identify an individual even when no other clue is available. Biological identity is nothing more than a record of the personal combination of DNA that gives every individual their uniqueness in this world. Knowing our biological identity is very important as we can thereby identify our biological relatives. Such knowledge helps every person form deeper and more honest ties with other persons in their environment, know their origins and most importantly, protect themselves or better manage hereditary conditions.
