General Information
Nuclear DNA is the basic genetic material of an organism, which is found inside the nucleus of cells; it contains almost all information needed by the organism to develop and function normally.
Half is inherited from each biological parent thereby creating a unique blend of genetic characteristics for each individual – except for twins – a fact that allows genetic identification of individuals by analysing it. Genetic profiling of an individual includes testing of at least 24 regions that contain short tandem repeats (STRs); these regions differ in the population as to the number of repeats and do not encode any information for the individual. This analysis is used to infer the individual’s genetic fingerprint (genetic profile).
Applications
Technology
Thanks to the advanced technology used in the DNAlogy laboratories, nuclear DNA can be extracted from any source of biological material (blood, saliva, sperm, skin, sweat, hairs, nails, bodily fluids, etc) and from any background (documents, surfaces, cigarette butts, tooth brushes, chewing gum, glasses, cutlery, food, clothes, glasses, hats, condoms, knives, etc), while it is possible to analyse 24-44 STR genetic markers.
→ DNAlogy is the only Greek laboratory that provides the possibility to analyse 24-44 STR genetic markers. All analysis protocols are accredited in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025 2017 standards and are carried out in state-of-the-art robotic systems .
