Information

The DNAlogy scientific team works in partnership with scientists from other disciplines for forensic projects, in order to best meet all aspects of forensic investigation, simplifying the logistics of evidence management and utilising all clues contained in every piece of evidence. All our protocols have been customised in order to follow a specific course of evidence management; this allows every expert to extract the as much information as possible without tampering (but actually preserving) the evidence to be collected by other specialties.

FORENSIC MEDICINE

DNAlogy collaborates with forensic medicine experts in order to comprehensively investigate, manage and document cases of sexual assault, sexual abuse, life-threatening crimes, exhumations, etc. In many cases, the findings from a certain discipline are not enough to support one version of events or another. In contrast, combining the findings of two or more scientists can give a clearer picture of the events that took place.

One of the most characteristic cases of joint effort between Genetics and Forensic Medicine is identifying the means that was used to perpetrate bodily harm (e.g. knife, scissors, stone, etc), based on the wounds that are found on the victim by the medical examiner at the same time identifying the user of such means (i.e. the perpetrator) based on the results of DNA analysis performed by geneticists.

In cases of physical violence or sexual abuse, recording of the physical damage sustained by the victim by medical examiners and collection of the appropriate samples (e.g. victims’ clothes, vaginal/anal swabs, etc) can, in conjunction with the application of specialised DNA isolation and analysis methods, be the most reliable witnesses in a case.

BALLISTICS

Our partners in Ballistics are the FIC Laboratories of Forensic Investigations, which were founded and are headed by the Forensic Analyst and Court Ballistics Expert, Georgios Raftogiannis.

The FIC Forensic Investigation Laboratories conduct laboratory tests and assessments of conducted laboratory tests:

A) In cases, bullets, firearms, and other weapons, where is aim is their ballistic investigation for possible involvement in the cases studied, their ballistic results according to type, and the ammunition they accept or were used, as well as whether they fall under the provisions of L. 2168/93 on weapons, etc.

B) In Crime Scenes, by reconstructing them, where the aim to better understand how a crime was committed, based on the available clues and evidence, as per article 30, par. 7 of PD 14/2001.

C) In Tool Traces, where the aim is to identify the type of tool used and the manner in which it was used, in order to reach conclusions and identify the suspicious tool by comparison and if possible its user.

D) In Keys, Locks, Safes, Safety Cabinets, and Traces from Breaking-and-Entering Scenes, where the aim is to determine the accessibility of the culprit and whether the methodology that was allegedly used is consistent with the end result. i.e. real or fictitious.

E) In erased – eliminated serial numbers: in guns, vehicles and other objects, where the aim is to restore them, by identifying the original serial number and determine their owner or origin.

DIGITAL FORENSICS

The laboratories of DNAlogy provide analysis reports for data coming from PCs and electronic means, addressing with accuracy questions concerning the use and contents of evidence: extraction of visible data, reconstruction of paths and meeting points (GPS data) in computers, hard drives, memory cards, mobile phones, tablets, SIM cards, GPS devices, digital cameras, video-cameras.

All processes for data retrieval carried out by our experts are characterised by the utmost confidence, discretion, and confidentiality.

METHODOLOGY

Our approach follows a strict and validated method that ensures that our interventions will not tamper the data contained in electronic evidence. To examine PCs, first a clone of the hard drive is created, on which we conduct our analyses, this ensuring that the piece of evidence is fully protected. We then seek information of interest, which is copied to another location where you can find and use them. Every action that is taken by our experts is recorded in detail in the expert report, which is completed by stating simple and understandable conclusions.

As the science of Digital Forensics is constantly evolving, our technologies and protocols are expanded every day to allow our experts to solve every single case, from the simplest to the most complex one.
