Y Chromosome Analysis

General Information

The Y chromosome is part of the nuclear DNA and is found in males only.  Genetic profile of the Y chromosome (Y haplotype) is based on the study of regions that contain so-called short tandem repeats (STRs); these regions differ in the population as to the number of repeats and do not encode any information for the individual.

The Y chromosome is passed on entirely from the father to the son, which means that all male members of a family that share a male ancestor also have an identical Y haplotype. Therefore, the Y chromosome cannot be used for the purposes of identifying an individual; it is mostly used to identify the common paternal lineage or to electively study the genetic material of males in a mixed genetic material.

Applications

Y chromosome STR analysis is used to:

  • Determine kinship / common paternal lineage
  • Study the genetic material coming from male individual(s) in case it is found in a mixed genetic material together with that of a female individual (e.g. sexual assaults)
  • Count the male individuals in a mixed genetic profile

Technology

The team of DNAlogy Experts provide services of evidence collection, detection and analysis of the Y chromosome from any source of biological material (blood, saliva, sperm, skin, sweat, hairs, nails, bodily fluids, etc) and from any substrate (documents, surfaces, cigarette butts, tooth brushes, chewing gum, glasses, cutlery, food, clothes, glasses, hats, condoms, knives, etc).

→ All analysis protocols are accredited in accordance with the ISO/IEC 17025 2017 standards and are carried out in state-of-the-art robotic systems.
