Hair toxicological screening

Narcotic and pharmaceutical substances detection test

General Information

Scalp hair: Scalp hair grows at an average rate of about 1 to 1.5 cm per month. Each 1 to 1.5 cm of hair represents the history of substance use for 1 month. For example, an 8-cm long lock of hair contains the history of substance use for 8 to 12 months.

dnalogy

→ The toxicological analysis of hair allows us to investigate earlier periods of consumption and simultaneously to determine the user profile: occasional user, daily user, etc., while it is possible to determine precisely the amount of grams consumed per week or month for most narcotic and pharmaceutical substances.

Alternative hair sampling sites

Hair samples may also be collected from other areas of the body, such as the axilla, genitals, chest, hands, beard etc., providing also information about earlier use; however, it is not possible to determine precisely the exact time period of substance consumption because hair growth rate in these areas is not specific.

Detection Window: from 7 days – to years (depends on hair length)
For substance detection, about 7 days are required for the decomposition of the substance and its transfer to the hair through blood circulation.

Types of hair analyses: Full and sectional analysis.

Sectional analysis
Sectional analysis of scalp hair is the most detailed method for detecting narcotics in hair. Cutting hair into 1 cm segments allows to determine the use of a substance per month and provides a detailed consumption history profile. Furthermore, sectional analysis is useful in cases where the trend of use has to be determined, for instance the increase or decrease in the usage of a drug over time or to confirm its discontinuation.

Full analysis
Full analysis of the hair of the scalp can provide an overall image for the use of a drug for the period under study. This analysis may start from the period of the past 3, 6, 12 months, or depending on the length of the available hair.

Sample collection: Collection of 15 to 200 hairs (depending on the type of analysis to be performed) at least 1 cm long.

  • Steroids, tramadol, gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), LSD

Urine toxicological analyses - Urine drug detection test

dnalogy

Urine toxicological analyses are used to determine whether someone has used drugs recently.

Sample collection: Collection of 20 ml urine. The urine sample is collected in a clean and dry container any time of the day. Urine samples may be stored at 2-8 °C for up to 48 hours before testing. For prolonged storage, the samples can be frozen at -20 °C.

→ Detection Panel for 12 Narcotic and Pharmaceutical substances and metabolites in the urine

  • Amphetamine
  • Barbiturates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Buprenorphine
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
  • Methadone
  • Methamphetamine
  • MDMA
  • Morphine/Opioids
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Fentanyl

Saliva toxicological analyses - Saliva drug detection test

Toxicological analyses in saliva samples is a practice used to determine whether an individual has used drugs during the last 48 hours. Saliva test is better than urine test, as it is carried out with direct collection of a small portion of the sample, it is less invasive, it does not require toilet facilities and it cannot be falsified.

→ Detection Panel for 6 Narcotic Substances

  • Cannabinoids
  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamines
  • Opioids
  • Morphine
  • Ketamine

DNAlogy Experts

The Court Experts of DNAlogy’s scientific team and their partners provide a new protocol for toxicological analysis using hair, which allows the detection of narcotic or pharmaceutical substances consumed in earlier periods (months or years ago), as well as to determine their quantities.

The Experts of DNAlogy are registered in the lists of the Court of First Instance and the Office of the Public Prosecutor throughout Greece, and the tests they perform have both Judicial and Legal validity in cases where required.
